Queer Youth Network
PRESS RELEASE
FRIDAY 17TH OCTOBER 2008
Trans Youth Response to Stonewall Awards
The Queer Youth Network would like to express its concern and disappointment at the nomination of Guardian Journalist Julie Bindel for a Stonewall Award.
Short promo clip about Peter Kumar’s ongoing “coming out” marking National Coming Out Day 2008 (UK) on 12th October. Featuring Peter Kumar who this year, is coming out to his Indian family. Specially produced by the Queer Youth Network for Current TV.
Observed internationally the day creates the opportunity for individuals to be open about their lifestyles, relationships, friends and families and also creates a discussion and platform for their allies to encourage diversity and acceptance.
A reading group that tries to bridge the gap between queer academia and queer activism
The Reading Group came into being in order to bridge the gap that is always there between what can be described as the Ivory Tower of academia and the “real world” of activism. The idea is to discuss texts (books, films, ‘zines, articles, television series, comic books, academic articles, people’s opinions/knowledge/experiences) in ways that are meaningful to us and with the tools we have available. Some of us have a Queer Theory background, some of us are long-time queer activists and some of us are new to both things.
Bollox is a queer club night that happens at the third Friday of every month. Its slogan, “Never Mind the Gay Scene, Here’s Our Bollox!” seems to sum it up, really. Unlike the clubs in the Village, Bollox plays refreshingly alternative music and not only the same old songs that we’ve all heard before when we were here last time. It’s a fun night out, you’re bound to see people there that you wouldn’t see in other places in the Village and that’s part of the reason Bollox is so wonderfully diverse and welcoming. Queer Youth Network present the voices and experiences of some of their 10,000+ membership of young LGBTQQIAP (Queer) young people volunteering all over the UK… Due to price hikes by the Manchester Pride Organisers, the previously FREE stalls in the Lifestyle Expo now cost unfunded groups like Queer Youth Network over £70 and the inflated wristbands costing £22.50 exclude most of the uvlnerable young people QYN supports anyway… The solution? Make Your Own Pride and don’t be a sucker for gay capitalism…
